Surgical Science’ Simbionix ANGIO Mentor Simulator Plays Prominent Role in Physicians’ Training and Certification

Simbionix ANGIO Mentor virtual reality training simulator was used during the Dutch Society for Vascular Surgery annual assessments (October 2 – 3, 2014). During this event, vascular surgery residents from teaching hospitals across the Netherlands are assessed on their endovascular skills.

The assessments are hosted by the Experimental Centre for Technical Medicine (ECTM) at the University of Twente in collaboration with the Dutch Society for Vascular Surgery. During the two day event, the residents are assessed on seven different topics that are part of the vascular surgery curriculum. Prior to assessment, trainees go through a structured process including e-learning, pre-testing, practical case-specific assessments and learning progress tracking. Several modules of the ANGIO Mentor are used in the assessments, including Iliac/SFA, EVAR, TEVAR and Peripheral Embolization. Open skills are also assessed using carotid and abdominal trainers.

Assessment criteria, including the required minimum level of performance for each topic, are predetermined and provided to enable objective testing. Results are input into detailed forms, following the Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) method. Each OSATS report is added to the resident’s personal portfolio for proof of competence.

Dr. Bob Geelkerken, chairman of the Dutch Society for Vascular Surgery, commented that “The combination of skilled assessors, realistic simulation and objective assessments makes the event truly unique. Our goal for the future is to enhance our use of the ANGIO Mentor simulator to train all residents before they enter the operating theatre and to help experienced clinicians maintain their high skill level.”

Simbionix ANGIO Mentor simulators provide hands-on practice of endovascular procedures performed under fluoroscopy in the cath lab, interventional suite or an OR, in a virtual reality simulated environment. The comprehensive solutions are for individual and team training for learners of all levels and across multiple disciplines, including Interventional Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Electrophysiology, Interventional Neuroradiology, Neuro Surgery and Trauma.
