Structured Training Curricula
Use Case I – Structured Training Curricula
In order to improve the technical proficiency of residents at a busy surgical training program, the program directors decided to incorporate a proficiency-based curriculum.
The curriculum includes both didactic and technical skills components. The simulation-based training is performed on the Simbionix virtual reality simulators at the training center in 1-hour sessions throughout the program until performance goals are achieved.
On July 1st, residents of all surgical departments arrive at the hospital. By that time, the curriculum needs to be available online for all specialties, and residents need to be registered into the system.
Challenges:
- To design and implement simulation-based curricula for all residency programs
- To enable online learning as part of the curriculum
- To perform administrative tasks such as user registration and training assignment
- To track residents’ course participation and performance
- To monitor the resident’s training progress continuously
- To assess cognitive knowledge and technical skills and perform pre and post tests
- To adjust training to individual needs
MentorLearn Solution
- The educator may either select simulation-based curricula from an existing library prepared by experienced educators, or may design a new curriculum according to specific needs. The curriculum may include both didactic content and simulation cases.
- The simulation center staff registers all new residents to MentorLearn and assigns their curricula.
- All residents are provided with system usernames and are introduced to the curriculum they are required to complete within the training period.
- Residents access their curricula online to complete didactic learning.
- Residents undergo the hands-on proficiency based training at the training center. After logging into MentorLearn on the Simbionix simulator, they follow the simulation curriculum they were assigned to.
- Educators follow the residents’ training history and access the comprehensive reports to assess learning progress and track attendance. Residents view their performance online and may compare their progress to anonymous peer progress reports.
