Association Training & Assessment

Use Case III – Medical Association Simulation-Based Training and Assessment

Medical associations are investing extensively to find an effective teaching device to train and maintain the skills required for endoscopic procedures. In order to do so, they develop and validate standardized simulation-based curricula, which include a combination of cognitive and hands-on components.

Challenges:

  • To develop the cognitive component of the curriculum
  • To include a virtual reality simulator to practice the necessary skills for performing the procedure in a risk-free environment away from the patient
  • To perform scientific validation of the simulation-based curriculum as a teaching device
  • To modify the curriculum according to scientific feedback
  • To incorporate this virtual reality simulation curriculum in training courses

Additional Challenges:

  • To determine the curriculum as a pre-certification requirement for all surgeons undergoing association certification
  • To perform high stakes exams for assessment and certification

MentorLearn Solution:

  1. Learners may either be registered into the system by an administrator and provided with a user name, or allowed to self register.
  2. The learner logs into MentorLearn from any location to complete the didactic learning and online knowledge-based assessment.
  3. The learner logs into MentorLearn on a Simbionix simulator at the training center, and follows the training curriculum either independently or under supervision.
  4. Simulation-based assessment of skills is performed by comparing the performance metrics recorded by the system to benchmarks and rating scales developed by the scientific community, to determine learner’s proficiency level.
  5. Learner performance is assessed according to the curriculum requirements and detailed simulator reports, and based on scientific validation of the curriculum. The medical association may provide certification based on the simulation curriculum and training results.
