GI Endoscopy – Fundamental Skills

The GI Endoscopy – Fundamental Skills module offers didactic tutorials and designated skill tasks to guide the trainee through learning and acquiring competence in GI Flexible Endoscopy essentials.

This module provides the learners with the opportunity to assess themselves as they progress along the learning curve to competency.

The skill tasks addressed are in compliance with the five deconstructed skills as defined by SAGES*:

Endoscopic navigation, Mucosal evaluation, Targeting, Retroflexion, and Loop reduction.

Use of this simulation module can facilitate acquisition of dexterity in these foundational elements of technical endoscopy performance.

The module is aimed at preparing trainees for performance of endoscopic procedures through focus on these critical technical elements of endoscopic practice.  As such, the module is intended to help trainees prepare for clinical performance, and may be appropriately used in connection with curricular programs such as the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Flexible Endoscopy Curriculum, developed with the help of SAGES and required by the ABS for all general surgery residency graduates beginning in 2018.

This module is available on the following simulation platforms- the GI-BRONCH Mentor, and GI Mentor Express.
