ENDOVASCULAR Basic Skills Module

The Endovascular Basic Skills module addresses the growing need to enhance the fundamental endovascular skills required of the interventional clinician in order to perform an endovascular procedure. This module is specifically designed for inexperienced physicians to allow them practice on the wire-catheter skills and manipulation techniques.

The module consists of tasks in a non-anatomic setting as well as on an anatomical vascular model to provide a relaxed environment outside the cath lab / OR in which to practice the skills required to perform endovascular procedures.

The module is intended for physicians across multiple disciplines including:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Interventional Neuroradiology
  • Neuro Surgery
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

Learning Objectives:

  • To master use and manipulation of endovascular tools in both non-anatomical and anatomical settings
  • To gain familiarity with different guidewire diameter/curves and various  catheter head shapes
  • To practice wire-catheter manipulation
  • To master acquiring stability of guidewire-catheter-sheath system
  • To practice performing non-selective and selective arteriography
  • To practice cannulating a branch in a reversed manner in different aortic arch types
  • To practice selective catheterization of different branches and 3rd order vessel
  • To practice navigating up and over different types of aortic bifurcation
  • To practice navigating across an area of high tortuosity
  • To cannulate a stent graft contralateral gate using an angled catheter and a wire
  • To practice acquiring and using a roadmap
  • To practice correct c-arm positioning for optimal visualization of vessel take-off
