Board of Directors

Avshalom Horan – Chairman
Mr. Horan is a Managing Partner at Bridge Investment Fund – a VC based in Cleveland Ohio and Tel Aviv, focused on investing in Israeli early stage med-tech companies ready to launch their US operation. In addition Mr. Horan is a venture partner with Tene Capital – an Israeli private equity investment fund and serves on the Board of several industrial companies. He has an extensive background in seed investment and management of technology companies through their early stages. During his long service with the Israeli Military Intelligence, he headed a special department overseeing major R&D projects involving state of the art technologies. Mr. Horan was the VP of a technology holding company within Bank Leumi Investment Group. He founded and was the CEO of Rad Biomed Ltd., a technology incubator where several startup companies were seeded. Mr. Horan has served as the Chairman of Simbionix since its inception at Rad Biomed from the development of the first surgical simulator in the industry through its becoming the market leader in MIS simulation. Mr. Horan holds a PhD in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University, and is a decorated Colonel (res.) in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
 
   
Jim Petras
Mr. Petras has, since 1993, been President and a Managing Director of Capital One Partners LLC, a Cleveland-based private equity firm and the Managing General Partner of the Early Stage Partners Funds with $81 million venture capital funds presently under management. Early Stage Partners focuses on Ohio and Michigan’s most promising industry clusters, including medical devices, IT, instrumentation, controls and electronics (ICE), advanced materials, and alternative energy. Mr. Petras has been involved in virtually all of the transactions that Capital One and Early Stage Partners have undertaken, and he serves as Chairman or a Director for many of their portfolio companies, notably Terresolve Technologies Ltd., Simbionix USA, Ovation Polymers, EcoSmart Technologies, Inc., and Arisdyne Systems, Inc.
Prior to forming Capital One, Mr. Petras formed Cleveland-based Wolfensohn Ventures, L.P., a $50 million investment fund in 1988. Wolfensohn Ventures sourced, structured, and managed middle market equity investments and was funded by Australian billionaire and media entrepreneur, Kerry Packer, and former World Bank President, James D. Wolfensohn. Mr. Petras also founded and staffed a successful venture unit based in Cleveland for Citicorp. While at Citicorp Mr. Petras, through a succession of executive positions, managed a region of Citicorp’s leveraged lending business with offices in three states, a portfolio in excess of $1,240,000,000 and a team of over 100 professionals.
Mr. Petras is a recipient of the 2006 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Northeast Ohio, a graduate of Oberlin College (B.A. 1974) and the University of Michigan (M.A. and M.B.A. 1978) and a member of the Ohio and Illinois Societies of CPAs, the AICPA as well as the Cleveland Chapter of the World President’s Organization (WPO), a former member of the Young President’s Organization (YPO), former Chairman of the Board and present Director of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland.
 
   
Raanan Cohen
Mr. Cohen was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Koor in July 2006. Mr. Cohen served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Scailex Corporation Ltd. (formerly Scitex) from 2004 to July 2006. He also serves as Vice President of Discount Investments Corporation Ltd. (DIC), Koor’s controlling shareholder, since August 2001 and previously served as Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of DIC from 1999. Prior to joining DIC, Mr. Cohen was an associate with McKinsey & Company, Inc. in London from 1997. Mr. Cohen is a lawyer, admitted to the Israel Bar. Mr. Cohen is a member of the board of directors of a number of companies in the IDB group, including Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd. and Cellcom Israel Ltd. Mr. Cohen holds bachelor’s degrees in law and in economics from Tel Aviv University and a masters degree in management from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
 
   
Bob Massie
Mr. Massie has been President of Columbus, Ohio-based Chemical Abstracts Service (cas.org), an operating division of the American Chemical Society, since 1992. CAS is the world’s leading provider of online chemical information to pharmaceutical, chemical, academic, and intellectual property researchers. Under his leadership, CAS has enjoyed sixteen consecutive years of growth.
Mr. Massie had extensive prior information and publishing industry experience. He was President and CEO of Gale Research (Detroit, MI), a unit of the Thomson Corporation, and in the 1980’s, he held senior executive positions with the Torstar Corporation, the largest newspaper and book publishing company in Canada. Previously, he was a management consultant with the New York office of McKinsey & Co., where his clients included G.E. and the New York Times Company. In the mid-1970’s, he practiced international law with the firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Massie holds a joint JD/MBA degree from Columbia University, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar and editor of the Journal of Transnational Law; he is an honors graduate of Yale College.
Mr. Massie has served on boards of a number of for-profit companies, including OneSource and MindLeaders. He is currently a member of several community Boards of Directors including the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, TechCholumbus and The Columbus Partnership, a civic development collaborate comprising Columbus-area CEOs.
 
   
Glen Mayfield
Mr. Mayfield possesses more than 42 years of private equity, corporate finance and commercial banking experience. He founded Mayfield & Robinson, Inc. in 1978. This firm specialized in merchant banking activities and in corporate finance and business advisory services targeting firms in the Midwest. His success in these endeavors led to the formation of River Cities Capital Fund I in 1994, which Glen co-founded with his partner, Ted Robinson.
Previous to his corporate finance and venture capital career, Mr. Mayfield was a Vice President ofThe First National Bank of Cincinnati (now part of U.S. Bank), specializing in commercial lending to a diverse portfolio of companies spanning many industries and all stages of development. He had earlier served in a marketing and sales capacity with Armstrong World Industries. Following college, Glen served with the United States Marine Corps, obtaining the rank of Captain.
He holds a B.A. from DePauw University. Among Mr. Mayfield’s numerous community activities are his service on the Board of Trustees of the Christ Hospital, of which is currently the Chairman, and the Board of Advisors of the Neuroscience Institute. In addition, he currently serves on the Board of the Elizabeth Gamble Deaconess Home Association, a foundation dedicated to improving healthcare in Cincinnati. Mr. Mayfield has served on the Boards of Directors of over twenty public and private companies, and is currently on the board of Galaxy Associates, PerfectServe, and Simbionix.
 
   
Solly Alain Lawi
Mr. Lawi has been working at Mirelis Investrust S.A in Geneva since 1997.
Mirelis is an asset management company, where Mr. Lawi serves as General Manager, portfolio manager and member of the management committee.
Prior to Mirelis, Solly was head of Private Banking and a member of the management committee at Societe Bancaire Julius Baer S.A., Geneva.
He served as the assistant to the Senior Vice President of the Corporate Banking Department at Barclays Bank, California, San Francisco, Corporate and International Banking Division. Mr. Lawi earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the Faculty of Arts, at Geneva University.
 
   
gary2 Gary Zamler
Gary Zamler was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Board member of Simbionix in April 2006. He has been involved in US – Israeli medical technology and innovation for the past 25 years, bringing a rich background and experience in global distribution & sales strategy. There is hardly a global market where Mr. Zamler has not been involved in sales, marketing, and distribution strategy and implementation, particularly in the US and Asia.
Prior to joining Simbionix, Mr. Zamler was the Director of Sales for the rapidly growing Given Imaging Ltd, which pioneered the field of wireless Capsule Endoscopy. During his three and a half years at Given, he was involved in the distribution of Given Imaging products throughout the world. Mr. Zamler held key management positions in several leading International Medical Diagnostic Imaging companies; Country Sales Manager for GE Medical Systems in Israel, Global CT Sales Manager for Marconi Medical (former Picker International and currently Philips), Vice President of Commercial Operations for Elscint’s largest subsidiary in the USA, and Managing Director and General Manager for Elscint’s Diagnostic Imaging operations in Southern Africa. Mr. Zamler earned his undergraduate degree with honors at Eastern Michigan University (USA) and pursued many advanced International business management courses in the United States, Israel, and Europe. He holds a Six Sigma belt from GE Medical Systems.
